I can’t believe today was the first buddy event! It felt so far away last weekend! I had a blast today with my buddy Kinzey and my buddy partner Olivia. We did so many awesome things like going into the splash park! We even got snow cones, which was really fun! Kinzey got lemon and Grape, I got blue raspberry and Pina colada, and Olivia got dragons blood, which turned out to not be very good, haha. After we got out snow cones and ate a few bites, we started walking, presumably to find a place to sit. However, Kinzey had other plans for us and we ended up taking a stroll through the whole park! It was fun though because we were able to just learn more about each other. For instance, as we were walking, I tried to figure out Kinzey’s favorite song by singing bits of them. It was cool because even though Kinzey is non-responsive, we were still able to figure out if she did or didn’t, which was normally the case, like the song. That’s one of the things we don’t think about often, how to communicate if speech isn’t an option. I personally think that it’s a very important thing to consider because not everyone can communicate in the same way. Therefore we have to find other ways to communicate through body language, gestures, and facial expressions. I think as a society we have become so used to verbal communication that all other forms have been left out or forgotten. But those other forms of communication are just as, if not more, important than verbal because it promotes inclusion of everybody and provides means of communication amongst all different types of people, which is amazing. “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, which goes to his heart.” -Nelson Mandela
